OUR SERVICES

The needs and experiences of carers are fundamental to our work as well as our origin story.

Before becoming one of the country's leading cancer information specialists, our late founder Dr. Rose Thompson was also a cancer carer. While in the middle of her studies at radiotherapy school, Rose’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly passed away at the age of 47, when Rose was 19 years old. It is because of these experiences as a carer for her mother that Rose developed her lifelong passion for enhancing cancer services and information for global majority and low-income communities.

Through Rose’s story, as well as our years of working with diverse communities affected by cancer, The Rose Thompson Foundation recognises the importance of supporting carers in their own journeys -  not only as a vital support for so many patients - but as individuals with their own support, wellbeing and cultural needs. For these reasons, we are proud to announce that The Rose Thompson Foundation is launching our new Carers Support Group!

Our Carers Support Group will offer a variety of useful, comprehensive, and culturally sensitive services to assist caregivers from global majority and low-income backgrounds. Members will be able to connect with other carers at our monthly meet-ups, receive information and resources on the kinds of support available to them, participate in wellbeing activities and resources, and join a community of people who are supporting the care of a loved one with cancer.

As a grassroots community organisation, from both personal and professional perspectives, we are familiar with the gaps and challenges in the healthcare system, especially for people from diverse cultural backgrounds.  We know that to enhance quality of life, cancer care should be holistic and person-centred for both patients and carers and not just focused on the disease.
